Big coronavirus infection rate spike in Leicester neighbourhood

The coronavirus infection rate in one Leicester neighbourhood has risen above 1,000 cases per 100,000 people.

Latest analysis of seven day incidence rates across different parts of the city show a surge in Netherhall and Thurnby Lodge in the week ending on January 22.

Its rate was 1,000.7 cases per 100,000 people after 106 Covid-19 cases were reported. It marks a huge increase on the infection rate of 651.4 cases per 100,000 people in the week before.

The area had the highest rate of any of the 37 Leicester neighbourhoods and was well above the city-wide rate of 555 cases per 100,000.

City council public health officials say the spike in Netherhall and Thurnby Lodge has been caused by an outbreak in an unnamed care home though they have not said how many cases were found there.

Last week the council’s strategic director of social care and education Martin Samuels said there had been a significant rise in cases with three major outbreaks in city care homes.

A city council spokeswoman said: “Our public health team does looks at individual areas of the city – known as ‘super output areas’ – on a regular basis, several times a week.

“They examine care homes data, businesses, testing issues, contact tracing and look at other characteristics such as age profiles to analyse what is going on and inform all our control measures, including community engagement, testing strategy, communications, community support, and enhanced contact tracing.”

Over the entire city there were 1,959 positive tests over the seven days, compared to 1,922 the week before.
