Driver clocked speeding at nearly 120mph on M1

A motorist has been caught driving in excess of 100mph on the M1, police said.

The driver was clocked doing 118mph at 1:02am on Sunday morning (February 6) while travelling on the M1 northbound at junction 21, according to a tweet from Leicestershire Roads Policing Unit.

The motorist passed the roadside tests but received a summons to the magistrates’ court for speeding and inconsiderate driving, police said.

“We are out and about, drive legally please,” the force advised in a tweet.

Driving over 100mph is a category C speeding offence and can be punished by a hefty fine – sometimes up to 175% of your weekly income.

Depending on the severity of the offence and the discretion of the magistrates, convicted speeders can also face six penalty points and even a driving ban.
