Half a century has passed since this set of pictures filled the pages of the Leicester Mercury

We’ve delved a little further back into the archive to bring you another fascinating set of pictures.

It was the same year that Rolls Royce went bankrupt, decimalisation had folk scratching their heads, British Leyland launched the Marina, 90 Russian diplomats were expelled for spying, Spaghetti Junction opened, Diamonds are Forever was the latest Bond flick and The Old Grey Whistle Test was aired for the first time on BBC2.
