Health bosses host online events on £450m hospital plans

Health bosses are hosting a series of online events to help people find out more and ask questions about proposals to spend £450 million transforming acute hospital and maternity services in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The events have been arranged as part of the Building Better Hospitals for the Future public consultation, which launched at the end of September and runs until 21 December 2020.

The plans will see £450 million of Government cash spent improving and altering the city’s three hospitals – Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hosptial and Leicester General Hospital.

The planned flagship projects are a standalone children’s hospital, a dedicated maternity hospital – both at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site and a treatment centre for planned operations and procedures – on the Glenfield campus.

The Leicester General Hospital site will become home to a number of services as a ‘community healthcare campus’.

Plans also include two ‘super’ intensive care units with 100 beds in total – almost double the current number.

Bosses behind the proposals say they would provide 139 more hospital beds and change acute and maternity services by moving all acute care to the Leicester Royal Infirmary and to Glenfield Hospital.

Acute care includes patients receiving treatment for severe injury or illness, urgent medical conditions, or during recovery from surgery.
