Lowest local daily Covid infections update so far this year

Fewer than 400 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed across the city and county in the past 24 hours for the first time in weeks.

In Leicester there were 169 cases added to rolling tolls, a further 201 were recorded across Leicestershire.

Broken down to district and borough level, lower Covid-19 numbers have been recorded in some areas that have previously been seeing higher cases.

Charnwood’s overall total was up by 42 and Blaby’s 39.

Hinckley and Bosworth saw another 36 infections identified and 29 were picked up via testing in Harborough.

There were 23 new cases in North West Leicestershire, 20 in Oadby and Wigston and 12 in Melton.

Last Monday 630 cases were recorded in the city and county, at the start of the month the daily case count was consistently between 700 and 800.

The new cases, updated today at 4pm, mean that the total number of cases across the city and county since the start of the pandemic area by area are :

  • Leicester: 29,117 (2,030 cases in the past seven days)

  • Blaby: 5,651 (409)

  • Charnwood: 9,893 (577)

  • Harborough: 4,053 (247)

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 4,738 (361)

  • Melton: 2,095 (115)

  • North West Leicestershire: 4,472 (383)

  • Oadby and Wigston: 4,138 (170)

In other coronavirus news, police issued a warning after they were called to people sledging at a county beauty spot.

Meanwhile, places of worship in Leicester have been urged to voluntarily close their doors to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

The latest seven-day infection rates, area by area, are:

  • Leicester: 573.1 cases per 100,000

  • Blaby: 402.9 cases per 100,000

  • Charnwood: 310.5 cases per 100,000

  • Harborough: 263.3 cases per 100,000

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 319.1 cases per 100,000

  • Melton: 224.6 cases per 100,000

  • North West Leicestershire: 369.7 cases per 100,000

  • Oadby and Wigston: 298.2 cases per 100,000
