Man charged with manslaughter over Braunstone Gate assault as victim is named

A man who died after being assaulted on Braunstone Gate in Leicester has been named.

Charles Neeson was found unconscious on Braunstone Gate, outside Natterjacks at around 10.30pm on Friday, August 27.

The 49-year-old from Leicester was taken to hospital where he died on Monday evening. A post-mortem examination has taken place and concluded that Mr Neeson died of a head injury.

Over the weekend, a 27-year-old Leicester man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) and was released on bail.

Today – Wednesday, September 1 – he was re-arrested on suspicion of murder, and has since been charged with manslaughter.

Charles’ family have paid tribute to him, saying he was a much-loved man, who prioritised and helped those around him.

Their statement reads: “Charles is a loved father, brother, uncle, loyal friend and significant other. He’s a good man that has always prioritised and helped those around him.

“He will live on through our memories and will always be remembered. We’re all so distraught by this tragedy and are working through this as a family.”

Detective Inspector Kenny Henry from East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: “This is an extremely difficult time for Mr Neeson’s family and they are being supported by specialist officers as our investigation continues.

“We know it was a busy evening and there were a number of people in the area at the time. We urge anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to officers to get in touch if they witnessed the incident or know anything about the circumstances leading up to it.

“We would urge any taxi or delivery drivers who may have been in the area to get in touch if they recorded any footage on their recording equipment. Also, if you or anyone you know has any footage captured on their telephone, please contact us.”
