One part of Leicestershire sees 7-day rise in virus rates

Latest figures have shown where the coronavirus infection rates stand in Leicestershire compared to the rest of England as the Government considers how to bring the country out of lockdown.

The number of new coronavirus cases in Leicester continues to fall week-on-week, but with a seven-day infection rate of 253.2 cases per 100,000 people the city still stands in the top 20 of 315 council areas.

Oadby and Wigston has also seen a dramatic fall in its seven-day incidence and is now at 128th place.

However, the Harborough area is one of only 12 places in the country to see a weekly rise, with the rate increasing slightly to 179,1 cases per 100,000 people, while North West Leicestershire is in the top 50 with a rate of 200.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Rutland had topped the list last week with an infection rate inflated by a Covid-19 outbreak at the 950-inmate HMP Stocken, but now it has fallen to 72nd place.

Blaby, Charwood and Harborough stand at 71st, 75th, and 80th place respectively in the list With Hinckley and Bosworth at 118th spot and Melton at 156th.

The list has been compiled by the Press Association based on verified Public Health England data in the seven days up to Monday, February 11.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he plans to unveil a ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown on Monday (22).

He has promised a “cautious but irreversible” approach to easing the measures which have been in place since early January.
