The peculiar sight of a P on people’s post had caused so much speculation that a group of people flocked online to a post asking if anyone knew what the scrawl actually means.

The original post on Reddit attracted hundreds of comments, with some suggestions seen as ones that could terrify any homeowner.

“It’s what thieves use to mark your house to let others know you have expensive dogs,” said one person.

However, others felt the reason was more light-hearted and something that can help little grey cells.

“[It’s a] very subtle Wordle clue,” said another person. “Takes five days then you just rearrange them. Never right.”

However, the real reason has now been uncovered thanks to an actual postie.

Clarifying the confusion on Reddit, they said the letter was pretty simple in its meaning.

The mystery has finally been sold

“If you had a packet/parcel it stops us from forgetting about it,” they said.

Fellow postmen and women joined in, with another saying: “It’s the postie’s way of reminding themselves that when they come to post your letter there’s also a parcel for you.”

Explaining further, a third added: “That’s so they don’t post your letter, then find out halfway down the street they forgot to knock and give you your parcel.”

The system can involve numbers as well as letters too.

“Sometimes they’ll write P10 or something on the previous letter,” revealed one user. “That lets them know they have a parcel for next door (number 10) but no letter.”
